Senior Housing Solutions (SHS) was the first non-profit organization in the nation to explore “home sharing” as an innovative housing strategy for seniors with low incomes. In the mid 1980s, we initiated this concept by renting rooms to seniors in a six-bedroom house in San Jose. We furnished the common areas of the house, installed phone and cable television access and offered rent at affordable rates to seniors. It was even featured on the popular television commentary 20/20!
Today, we manage 11 single-family residential homes that provide housing for 52 low-income seniors. The average age of current residents is 72 years and their average monthly income is $987. Rent, including utilities, phone, cable and laundry facilities, averages just $296 a month!
And we are growing – by January 2011 we plan to add four new houses! Our housing model has proved effective in providing seniors safe, stable, and supportive affordable housing. Housemates become close friends, providing each other with invaluable mutual companionship and security.
